Hovorovější:	We started laughing.
Formálnější:	We began laughing.

Když jsme ten vtip slyšeli, všichni jsme se začali smát.

Slovesa BEGIN a START jsou významově velmi podobná, často je lze zaměnit:

When does summer start?	Kdy začíná léto?
When does summer begin?

Obecně platí, že BEGIN je formálnější než START.

START (nikoliv BEGIN) používáme s významem START WORKING/MAKE SOMETHING START (auto, motor, pračka...), START A BUSINESS a START A JOURNEY:

To start the machine, press this red button.	Přístroj spustíš stisknutím tohoto červeného tlačítka.
Robert and I are starting a travel agency together.	S Robertem společně zakládáme cestovní kancelář.
We need to start early because the journey takes five hours.	Musíme vyrazit brzy, protože cesta trvá pět hodin.

Begin = formálnější

The management will begin interviews tomorrow.	Vedení společnosti zahájí pohovory zítra.
The company has begun research on a new product.	Firma začala vyvíjet nový produkt.

Formálnější:	I shall begin.
Hovorovější:	I'll start.

Nyní, když sedíte pohodlně, začnu s prezentací.

Start = hovorovější
